News reporting: GM to lay off 3,400 at Detroit plant, other EV sites

General Motors announced indefinite and temporary layoffs targeting its electric vehicle production chain, reducing luxury EV production by roughly half at its Factory Zero facility in Detroit, and impacting workers at Ultium Cells battery plants in Ohio and Tennessee. GM’s publicly stated reason was the reversal in federal EV policy by the Trump administration, but its decision to make luxury EVs, costing around $100,000 and more, as well as impact of tariffs resulted in low demand and unpredictable conditions for workers.

A large white flag covers one of the sides of the plant with text ‘FACTORY ZERO,’ the American flag, the UAW wheel logo, and the GM logo. Another part of the plant has dock doors for delivery trucks.
