Cleveland Cliffs, which runs Dearborn Works located on the Ford Rouge Complex, has significantly downsized its operations in response to nearly half a billion dollars of losses reported for the first quarter of 2025. The company cites a weak projected auto market, low price of steel, and tariff impacts as a reason for their decision. More than 600 mineworkers unionized with the United Steelworkers in Minnesota at the Minorca Mine and Hibbing Taconite Mine were also laid off, with the Minorca Mine temporarily closing.
